Training

A Mobility Specialist training a patient's tissues and joints through Functional Range Conditioning at Northwest Spine and Sport.

We realize the importance of specialized, individual training so Northwest Spine & Sport utilizes Functional Range Conditioning (FRC)® to reinforce the positive changes that are achieved from treatment as well as the FRS Internal Strength Model®.

What is FRC®?

Functional Range Conditioning is a logical approach to training that applies current scientific principles to the musculoskeletal system. FRC® readies your joints and tissues by improving your body’s ability to effectively produce different types of movements at greater ranges of motion with greater strength and control.

FRC® is much more than a mobility system, it addresses force production, force dissipation, speed of contractions and tissue loading capacities at all ranges of motions to prepare your body to move well in every way.

This approach “makes stuff work nice”. Movements are variable and you can’t train all of them, but with this system you can train your joints for all movements that can occur.

FRC® is now being utilized by the training staffs of many professional sports teams including the Portland Trail Blazers, The Seattle Seahawks and the Portland Timbers.

What is the FRS internal strength model®?

Strength training prioritizes external goals like strength, speed, and agility, which aren’t bad in and of themselves. The issue is that the internal system is often overlooked in the process, usually at the expense of the athlete. This can lead to really impressive performances, but it also increases the rate of sport’s injuries, which is far from ideal. This is why we have adopted the FRS Internal Strength Model at our practice.

The Internal Strength Model is based on these four truths about human movement:

  1. All movements are created internally.

  2. All movements are executed internally.

  3. Overcoming internal constraints is the first step to improving one’s overall mobility.

  4. External displays of movement are an indication of one’s internal function.

In short, one’s external physical capabilities are often a reflection of their internal capabilities, so in order to improve their mobility, we have to start there.
